Michael has been involved in emerging market equity research and portfolio management since 1991. After a brief spell in investment banking, Michael became active in Latin American equity research and sales in 1991. He began managing equity investments in Latin America and Emerging Europe in 1999 at Wafra Investments in New York. Most recently, he was a portfolio manager for Principal Global Investors, where he led the emerging markets team from 2001 to 2012. While there, Michael managed the diversified emerging markets portfolios and specialized regional Asian equity strategies. He also worked with Principal’s subsidiary in Chile, consulting on their fund lineup, and helped them to develop a quantitative equity process to beat the IPSA and IGPA (local Chilean indices). In addition, Michael also coordinated research efforts across multiple Principal Financial Group subsidiaries in EM, including Chile, Brazil, Mexico, India and China. In late 2012 Michael joined RS Investments with his 10 member team to build up their in house emerging market expertise. RS Investments was acquired by Victory Capital in 2016.
Michael holds a B.A. from Middlebury College. He earned his M.A. – History from Christ's College at the University of Cambridge with an emphasis in the Middle Ages and Modern European history. Michael earned his M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College. Michael speaks four languages and has lived in seven countries.
